Breakups+Holidays+Mercury Retrograde (oh my!)

Ohhh breakups… nobody likes them once, let alone twice, so don’t try breaking up during a retrograde because it usually doesn’t stick. But it’s not as bad as it sounds – when we’re aware of what’s going on. We talked about this emotionally tricky combination of Breakups+Holidays+Mercury Retrograde with writer, Natalia Lusinski, at Here are some excerpts from her article:

The holidays can be a challenging time for relationships and are actually the most common time of year that couples break upAccording to a study done by London-based data journalist, David McCandless, and Lee Byron, a look at Facebook updates regarding breakups showed that the two most common times of year that breakups most frequently happen is right around Valentine’s Day and the two weeks before Christmas. The latter probably was ~not~ on your Christmas list. But, we’re currently in Mercury Retrograde — a time when you’re specifically not supposed to breakup with someone. So, will breakups in Mercury Retrograde last during the holiday season?

According to Astrology Zone, Mercury Retrograde is when Mercury speeds past the Earth, which happens 3-4 times per year. Of course, Mercury is the planet closest to the sun, so its orbit is much shorter than our planet’s. Because of this, when Mercury zooms by, you may feel it in the sense that it disrupts something in your life — like your love life, for instance. Chances are, you’ve probably felt it affect various facets of your life, but didn’t even know it.

You May Be Having Temporary Feelings

As for whether breakups will last — or not — Jaye at offers some input. “The word mercurial means fickle, temperamental, changeable — and that describes what you get when you try to break up with someone during this time,” Jaye tells Bustle. “Most likely, it won’t stick because these are temporary, fluctuating feelings. This isn’t all bad, however, because the hidden gift from Mercury in Retrograde is that we become our own best teachers. Try to use the energy to look at your relationship from another angle, and when Mercury does go direct, you can use the breakup time as a growing period for yourself, to reassess what is truly important to you. That way, regardless of what happens in your relationship, you’ve made the most of the astrological energies, deepening the love and acceptance for yourself.”

Tips To Manifesting During Mercury Retrograde in March 2019 According To Your Zodiac Sign

Everybody asks astrologers for advice on Mercury Retrogrades because the collective has been manipulated to think that retrogrades are these scary, looming dark clouds that roll in to ruin our lives in a matter of 20 days. Some writers have a tendency to jump quickly to the negative side of retrogrades, setting up their readers with doom and gloom scenarios, keeping them in fear. The truth is, retrogrades are not the worst scenarios in astrology, there’s actually much worse (more on that later). In fact, retrogrades can be fantastic if you know how to use them. Just like anything in life, it depends on your awareness of the energetics and how much action you’re willing to take.

A great reason to study astrology transits is to deepen your understanding of how to be prepared and manipulate (not a bad word, in this case) situations that come up. In astrology, a natal chart is a snapshot of the sky at the time of our birth. Each chart is like a cosmic backpack filled up with our individualized celestial gifts (i.e. natural talents, personal challenges, etc). What you do with the gifts is completely up to you. For example, understanding what Pluto in Retrograde means in your 7th house will allow you to approach one on one relationships in a much different way than others. Transmuting that placement involves not taking the actions of others personally when they get uncomfortable while Pluto completely restructures life as they knew it (or that relationship). People with this natal placement can have a terrible time with relationships, until they can comprehend that they are the catalyst for change. Once it is understood that you carry this Plutonian energy into every relationship, the intrinsic personal power can be glorious and be used for the good all.

When planets go into retrograde (or are retrograde in a natal chart), their main purpose is to shed light on old ways of doing things. Why? So you can do them better, of course! You can use this March transit combination of Mercury Retrograde + Neptune + Mars + Venus to grow into the new you. It’s not guaranteed to be graceful, growing can hurt sometimes, but it’s totally worth the effort if it means life is better on the other side of the change. Here’s how to make the most of this March 2019:

Aries – Mercury Retrograde will be in your 12th house. You’ll be putting in more effort and preparing work by yourself behind the scenes. It’s easy to get distracted, so stay focused and remember the end goal. Everything eventually comes to light, so stay mindful of your actions and don’t over promise during this retrograde. You’ll have 2 sextiles with Mars and Neptune helping out, that will soften any challenges that might come up. Once the retrograde has left it’s shadow period, you’ll be surprised at how much progress you’ve made. Don’t talk about it, just make it happen and surprise them when you’re done.

Taurus – Mercury Retrograde is in your 11th house of colleagues, business goals and resources. You may have a challenge and become aware of mistakes in regards to old contracts, especially if they involve foreign business. Expectations of acquaintances and colleagues can come back up for review. Keep an ear out for gossip but don’t add anything to it. Gossiping will have a possibility to backfire during retrogrades, while holding back could actually improve your situations and make you look good because you took the high road.

Gemini – Mercury Retrograde will be in your 10th house of public persona and father figures/ masculinity. Everything you’re going through will be out in the open and seen by others, even if you don’t want it to be. You may have to make some changes when it comes to how you treat others and make a little extra effort but, ultimately, this should go smoothly, because you’ll be well received when people see you making an effort.

Cancer – Mercury Retrograde will be in your 9th house of big visions, travel and higher education. During this time, it will help to be more flexible with your daily routines as you work towards your big goals. This time is here to help you rearrange things for your greater good and connect with more ambitious people, who will help you out in business.

Leo – Mercury Retrograde will be in your 8th house partners resources and expenses. It will be good to watch your budget. There may be some unexpected expenses that come up, or you may have to spend more than you thought on a project to get ahead. But if you think the new endeavors are a smart decision, you’ll have to spend anyways. Existing partners will be fine, but new connections could have a less than honest motive. Be cautious about dating anyone new and remember that not everything that glitters is gold. Once retrograde is out of it’s shadow period you’ll see clearly if they were actually gold or just cheap gold paint.

Virgo – Mercury Retrograde will be in your 7th house of relationships. Warning: Duck! Here come your ex. Hide your heart if you don’t feel like digging through the old memory banks. If you do decide to be kind and rewind, you may have an epiphany moment and realize why that relationship never worked the first time. What you thought was a conversation between 2 people was actually 2 completely different conversations at the same time. Handle your relationships with care, especially those that are most important to you.

Libra – Mercury Retrograde will be in your 6th house of daily routines. There is being in the flow and not being in the flow. This retrograde is going to take you out of the flow and your plans aren’t going to turn out like you think they will. You can take this as a good or bad thing. But because we like to empower our Gifted Astrology readers, try to reframe these challenges this way: This retrograde will teach you how to surrender. By disturbing your daily routines, work and/or health with some unexpected surprises, you can adopt a favorite phrase, “And I’m okay with that”. In tarot they call these “tower moments”, and the best way to get through these challenges will be finding a new order in your physical space as well as leaning on strong loved ones for their help.

Scorpio – Mercury Retrograde will be in your 5th house. Overall, this retrograde will go smoothly for Scorpios, but make sure to keep communication wide open and don’t hide away. Mercury retrograde is famous for miscommunication, don’t help it out by keeping secrets. Use this time to express yourself in new ways. If it turns into an awkward moment, blame it on Retrograde and keep it moving. Do keep an eye on your spending, especially on romantic dates during this time. You’ll have the urge to splurge on your loved ones.

Sagittarius – Mercury Retrograde will be in your 4th house, so home life will be shifting in some way. Family and property will be affected. You may want to keep an eye out for property damage and have home repairs redone or fixed again by an expert to solve the problem once and for all. Your 7th house of relationships will be lit up at this time. A relationship could start with someone that you already know (but never really had the chance to spend quality time with). It could be coming to the forefront to actually get started for real this time around. But remember, anything or anyone that falls away is for your highest good.

Capricorn – Mercury Retrograde will be in your 3rd house of business, communication and marketing.  This is the house where the typical retrograde mishaps occur – misinterpreted emails, important messages getting lost in spam, passwords being messed with – it’s all kindling for the fire this March. Luckily, your Capricorn traits of keeping calm and consistent will help you. If a project needs to be revisited and fixed, don’t fret, the results will be better than it would’ve been without this retrograde. This retrograde is a great time for your creative insights. The world needs those brilliant ideas of yours.

Aquarius – Mercury Retrograde will be in your 2nd house of finances and this time will change your financial circumstances, for good or bad, depending on how you’ve been spending recently. It’s the perfect time to comb through old expenses and find any unnecessary items like clothing, paperwork, and any possessions that you don’t need any more. Financial decisions can be helped with financial savvy family members, too. However, if they’ve already shown you that they’re not financially responsible, ignore their every word and do what’s in your own best interest.

Pisces – Mercury Retrograde will be in your 1st house of self. This month is the perfect time to rework your public image and figure out your long term goals. Don’t fear the big change that’s here because you’ve been waiting years for this, my dear! Make sure to be very clear with communication (they can’t read your mind, you know) and state your business expectations upfront, but use that famous creative thinking to make any mixups an opportunity for the better. This a a very powerful time to upgrade your life. Do. It. Now.

Surviving Mercury Retrograde Effects On Relationships

Mercury Retrograde (& how it affects us) is a mystery to a lot of people, especially when it comes to relationships. That’s why journalist, Natalia Lusinski, wanted to get our take on this astrological influence and gather tips for their readers to help them stay ahead of the game. Here are some excerpts from the article:

Jaye at, says wires get crossed and mixed messages tend to occur during Mercury Retrograde, but there are ways to keep communication clear. “It’s a challenging time for couples to communicate, but if you triple-check information, reread emails and texts before you hit send, and try to break information down into smaller pieces to make sure everything is clear, you can still express what’s in your heart.”

You know when you’re dating someone and everything’s going great, but then suspicions start to come up? Well, those may be more common now, during this current Mercury Retrograde. “If your relationship has been going well and suddenly a dark cloud of mistrust appears out of nowhere during Retrograde, try not to jump to conclusions,” she says. “Be kind to your other half and check in with them before making any accusations. During Mercury Retrograde, people can have a conversation with each other, but not realize they’re talking about two totally different things, and messages can get jumbled.”

As the study above found, a lot of breakups happen these couple weeks before Christmas. But instead of becoming one of the breakup statistics, there are ways to make it through the stressful holiday season with your significant other before just abruptly ending things. “Holiday time can also trigger unexpected feelings, and deep emotions can surface for lots of people,” Jaye says. “So instead of eviscerating your good thing, it will be advantageous to come from a supportive, loving place to straighten things out together. In addition, to keep stress at bay during your holiday travels, make sure to give yourself plenty of extra time, because Mercury Retrograde loves to reroute and complicate journeys.”

I don’t know about you, but I know traveling with a significant other can be tough, with or without Mercury Retrograde. As long as you are aware that traveling now may be especially challenging — knowledge is power — you should be able to make it through the next couple of weeks.

Overall, during Mercury Retrograde now — remember, just until Dec. 22! — spending time with your significant other may have more ups and downs than usual, so it’s important to be flexible and patient when it comes to plans and spending time together. “Mercury Retrograde can be frustrating for sensitive people that haven’t figured out how to use these astrological settings to their advantage yet,” Jaye says. “Delays, electronic malfunctions, and miscommunications are typical for these times. If you two are at odds because pesky Retrograde has thrown a wrench into your plans, help your sweetie out by being a loving oasis in the middle of the madness. Cooler heads prevail (and may be get rewarded with more presents at holiday time!).”
