How To Survive Mercury Retrograde Effects On Communication In Your Relationship

Here are some excerpts from “How To Survive Mercury Retrograde Effects On Communication In Your Relationship” by Laken Howard:

If you’re an astrology fanatic, you’re probably already well aware of how Mercury Retrograde can affect your life. But for the rest of us, it might be helpful to know: what even is Mercury Retrograde, and what does it mean for our love lives?

“The three-week period that we call Mercury Retrograde is a time when Mercury’s energies are moving inward or reverse,” Jaye at tells Bustle. “I personally like to to break down the word retrograde to explain how this three-week period affects us. The first half of the word ‘retro’, means past or reviving something from the past (like retro fashion). The second half of the word ‘grade’, defines a level of quality or importance. So, ‘retrograde’ brings back important things from our past to revisit, revive or re-plan — with the chief purpose of improving our lives when we live through it consciously.”

So even though Mercury Retrograde sounds ultra scary in theory, it is possible to use this time to grow with your partner and strengthen your relationship — but it won’t necessarily be easy.

What Romantic Challenges Do We Face During Mercury Retrograde?

Mercury, ruler of the mind and communication, is the messenger of the gods, and when his planet appears to move in reverse during retrograde, the idea is that our earthly communication is all out-of-whack as a result — which can have a profound impact on our close, intimate relationships.

“Communication is the number one challenge during Mercury Retrograde because Mercury is all about communication.”

“Communication is the number one challenge during [Mercury Retrograde] because Mercury is all about communication,” Jaye says. “When people are unaware of Mercury Retrograde, they can take what’s happening to them very personally (like anyone would), but when you’re aware, you can use it to your advantage. Meet your (and your partner’s) Retrograde experience with a mindset that it’s purpose is to deepen your life and love. Relationships improve by practicing compassion and accepting that it’s just three weeks in your long, beautiful journey together.”

Why It’s Harder To Communicate During Mercury Retrograde

Obviously, the planetary movements don’t dictate everything about our lives here on Earth — but Mercury Retrograde simply makes it more likely that we’ll have communication issues, like having difficulties compromising during an argument or hitting send on an important text too soon.

“Communication is more difficult because wires can get crossed and tangled during this time,” Jaye says. “Two people could think that they’re having a conversation about one topic, but if you were to ask them about it afterwards, you’d find that they were on completely different pages and they each heard a totally different story.”

How To Get Through Mercury Retrograde With Your Relationship Intact

So now that you’re aware of all the ways Mercury Retrograde might affect your love life, you’re probably wondering: what can I do to make sure my relationship survives the last Mercury Retrograde of 2017? The answer is actually fairly simple: just take a little extra time to think through how you communicate with your partner during this time.

“Don’t jump to conclusions during Mercury Retrograde, and to keep yourself out of hot water, double check your emails, social media posts and texts before you hit send,” Jaye says. “People may be extra-sensitive and your communication could be taken the wrong way, so keep your significant other in mind when you are sharing things publicly. Privately, you can be extra supportive of your other half if they’re experiencing a trying time, as Mercury Retrograde will have people dealing with computer problems, delays, mistakes, and challenges. Everyone appreciates positive people and if you lovingly remind them that they are clearing away the old to make room for the new, that may be all they need to lighten their retrograde load.”

Retrogrades and A Royal Wedding: What Will It Mean For Prince Harry and Meghan?

Millions of people are excitedly awaiting the Royal wedding of Prince Harry & Meghan Markle this month. As the marriage commences, the whole world (including the bride & groom), will be experiencing a significant retrograde pileup with three important planets in retrograde at one time. Every planet has a path that it typically travels on, and that path moves each planet’s unique energy in a specific direction. When planet direction isn’t moving forward we consider it to be in retrograde. Each planet spends time in retrograde at one time or another and retrogrades can act as a “cosmic clean out” by making us review how things are functioning in our lives.

Of course, our personal astrological charts dictate how retrogrades will affect us as individuals. In the case of the soon-to-be newlyweds, Prince Harry has his Sun in Virgo and his Rising Sign in Capricorn, while Meghan Markle has her Sun in Leo and her Rising Sign in Cancer. Though the official astrologer for the Royal Family has most likely checked on this wedding date and love compatibility already, this retrograde accumulation has two out of three planets retrograding in Capricorn (Saturn and Pluto), which shows us that this event will take more of an effort from Prince Harry. Relationships can be a lot of work, and getting the celestial backing on your union is a wise decision for anyone entering into a lifelong commitment. Being aware of the planetary aspects during our milestone moments can help us make the most out of the experience. Let’s take a look at each planet & see what it means for the new couple…

Saturn Retrograde

Saturn is the teacher planet of our skies and when it’s retrograde in Capricorn, it means that our plans will demand more energy, and every action we take must remain fair and just. When Saturn is in retrograde, it gives us the opportunity to do things in a different way, and like any good teacher, Saturn requires that we do it to the absolute best of our ability (read: come correct). This will affect Prince Harry more than Meghan, but with their complimentary Rising Signs, Meghan can help him along and ease any tension he may be experiencing.

Pluto Retrograde

Pluto is the planet of creative destruction and it works through renewal and rebirth. It acts as a kind of cosmic lymph system – cleaning out the toxins and things that don’t serve us any longer. When Pluto retrogrades, it makes us reflective. Once again, Capricorns will be most affected by this, so Prince Harry (Capricorn Rising) will feel this life reset and change at the deepest levels. By using these energies properly, the couple will have the ability to transform their union into a success story.

Jupiter Retrograde

Jupiter goes retrograde for approximately 4 months every year, rotating through the signs. This May it will be in Scorpio, which brings us a softer feeling than other retrogrades (including that pesky Mercury retrograde that we all secretly fear). Typically, Jupiter is about expansion outward, but when it’s retrograde it works on expanding us internally, to heal us and help us release the past. This isn’t the easiest (like a forward moving Jupiter), but it can be a beautiful transit for a couple to unite under when they know how to utilize the gifts from the skies and recognize that love heals all.

Many blessings & lifetimes of love to the newlyweds!

Breakups+Holidays+Mercury Retrograde (oh my!)

Ohhh breakups… nobody likes them once, let alone twice, so don’t try breaking up during a retrograde because it usually doesn’t stick. But it’s not as bad as it sounds – when we’re aware of what’s going on. We talked about this emotionally tricky combination of Breakups+Holidays+Mercury Retrograde with writer, Natalia Lusinski, at Here are some excerpts from her article:

The holidays can be a challenging time for relationships and are actually the most common time of year that couples break upAccording to a study done by London-based data journalist, David McCandless, and Lee Byron, a look at Facebook updates regarding breakups showed that the two most common times of year that breakups most frequently happen is right around Valentine’s Day and the two weeks before Christmas. The latter probably was ~not~ on your Christmas list. But, we’re currently in Mercury Retrograde — a time when you’re specifically not supposed to breakup with someone. So, will breakups in Mercury Retrograde last during the holiday season?

According to Astrology Zone, Mercury Retrograde is when Mercury speeds past the Earth, which happens 3-4 times per year. Of course, Mercury is the planet closest to the sun, so its orbit is much shorter than our planet’s. Because of this, when Mercury zooms by, you may feel it in the sense that it disrupts something in your life — like your love life, for instance. Chances are, you’ve probably felt it affect various facets of your life, but didn’t even know it.

You May Be Having Temporary Feelings

As for whether breakups will last — or not — Jaye at offers some input. “The word mercurial means fickle, temperamental, changeable — and that describes what you get when you try to break up with someone during this time,” Jaye tells Bustle. “Most likely, it won’t stick because these are temporary, fluctuating feelings. This isn’t all bad, however, because the hidden gift from Mercury in Retrograde is that we become our own best teachers. Try to use the energy to look at your relationship from another angle, and when Mercury does go direct, you can use the breakup time as a growing period for yourself, to reassess what is truly important to you. That way, regardless of what happens in your relationship, you’ve made the most of the astrological energies, deepening the love and acceptance for yourself.”
